Building YouTrip Overseas Transfer

YouTrip's Overseas Transfer enables users to send money to bank accounts overseas.
As Senior Designer, I drove the design this 0-1 feature, establishing key systems, UI patterns, and overseeing its successful launch and ongoing refinement.

Context

YouTrip is a multi-currency wallet widely loved by Singaporeans for its highly attractive FX rates and ease of paying overseas. In 2024, YouTrip expanded its offerings with the ability to transfer money overseas.

I was brought on the project to turn high-level flows into an actual product in the market.

Building complex systems from zero

Several complex systems underlie a simple money transfer. As a 0-1 feature, we had to build these systems.

I played a crucial role in translating technical documentation into easy-to-understand system logic, UX, and UI.

My initiative helped aligned cross-functional teams, and accelerated development timelines.

A playful welcome to win over users

Users who send money overseas tend to stick to services they are familiar with. As a latecomer to the space, we needed more than great rates to win users over.

To entice users, I designed an interface that appealed to both the rational and emotional. We evolved the final design with rounds of internal testing.

By tapping on their natural sense of curiosity and play, we drew users to effortlessly start on the first transfers.

An early-stage Figma prototype. Test participants intuitively knew what the slider would do and were intrigued by them. Their interest in interacting with the sliders gave us some confidence our strategy could work.

A prototype demonstrating the finer points of animation. This helped stakeholders buy into the proposal, and for devs to replicate the interaction. Try it here. If viewing on a mobile device, haptic feedback is included.

Flags matter to people. Since our strategy replied heavily on flags and belonging, we invested significant effort to get the flag details right.

Balancing user effort and information accuracy

Adding recipient details is a part of a transfer that requires high user effort. Moreover, for transfers to be successful, we had to ensure the accuracy of user-provided information.

Beneath the interface, we developed an elaborate web of UX, UI, regex and backend checks to make the experience easier for users while increasing information accuracy.

Placeholders for recipient names were localised to give users contextual hints of acceptable characters and name formats, as well as to create moments of cultural connection.

Bank codes can be confusing to users, so we found ways to make it easier to pick the right bank code. If a Bank List existed, we defaulted the selection to choosing the bank name from a dropdown list.

For channels without a reliable bank list, we did lookups based on the user's input so that users could check that they had input the right bank.

Improving with data

We also proactively iterated with results in early releases, tweaking various parts of the design to bring the rate for failed transfers from ~2% to 0.6%. This decrease saved the business approx S$5,000/mth in failed transfer fees.

Look good, feel good

I was responsible for the overall look and feel of the feature. While making a feature feel consistent through its journey is important, I also designed the feature to feel distinctively YouTrip.

Key interactions are callbacks to well-loved and iconic parts of YouTrip, thereby preserving the 'YouTrip' feel.
